The Gulf Coast Women’s Golf Association was started in October 1976. Pat Ely from Foxfire’s WGA along with Madeline Lewis had been encouraged by their club management to organize a new inter-club association. The original clubs present at this meeting were: Foxfire Club Club, Conquistador Bay CC, Palm Aire, Bent Tree Golf Club, Country Club of Sarasota and North Port Charlotte Golf Club. The first schedule was:

The clubs present proposed the League’s first Constitution and Bylaws which can be view by clicking here. It was approved at their November 5, 1976 meeting. The following ladies were elected on November 5, 1976 as the first league officers:
- Patti Russell from Bent Tree as President
- Carol Nevins from Palm Aire as Vice President
- Pat Ely from Foxfire as Secretary
- Evelyn Hoffman from Conquistador Bay as Treasurer
The original league started with 12 players per club with the best 8 scores used. Just like the current league they played a “Point System Basis” with team players receiving full handicap.
